Charitable Pharmacy

Prescription Information

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) has a charitable pharmacy in the clinic. This helps us provide VIM patients with prescription medication at little or no cost.

We are licensed by the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. This means we operate just like any other pharmacy. The difference is that we are able to serve low-income and uninsured people in a way that other pharmacies cannot.

Here is how we can help:

Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) These are programs offered by the drug manufacturers.  They help low-income people get the medications they need. Our pharmacy volunteers can help you apply for PAP. Then it may take 4-6 weeks for the drug company to approve your application. Once you are approved, you can receive your medications through VIM at no charge.

Institutional Patient Assistance Programs (iPAP) These programs help patients receive certain medications quickly, and at no charge. VIM participates in iPAPs with the drug manufacturers AstraZeneca, Merck, and others. If your doctor prescribes one of the medications provided to us by an iPAP, we can usually fill your prescription the same day. Patients do not need to apply for the Prescription Assistance Program mentioned in #1 to receive these medications.

Generic Medications Your VIM doctor may prescribe a “generic” medication, which includes most available $4 prescriptions. These cannot be filled at the VIM pharmacy. Please have these prescriptions filled at a local pharmacy of your choice. This process helps us save money so that we can help more patients.

Purchased Medications Once in a while, the only way for us to get a medication for a patient is to buy it. We try to buy these as inexpensively as possible. But, sometimes we must ask you to help us pay for it. If that happens, we will talk with you beforehand.

Donated Medications As a charitable pharmacy, we are also able to accept some donated medications. Click here to learn more.

Please note: VIM’s Charitable Pharmacy does not prescribe or dispense any narcotics, pain medication or medical marijuana.
