Donate to VIM

There are many of ways which individuals, organizations and foundations can help VIM improve health and wellness in Deschutes County. Most gifts are tax deductible and 100% of the donations to VIM are used locally.

Email Joe Farmer, Development Director or call 541.330.9054 for more information about donations.

Stocks, Bonds, or other assets

One of the most beneficial ways for a donor to make a gift to Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is to donate appreciated securities including appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have been held for more than one year. These gifts entitle you to an immediate income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities and to bypass the payment of a capital gains tax on the transfer of the securities.
The best stocks to donate are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing low yields. If you own stock, which has dropped in value below your cost, you may want to consider selling it and donating proceeds from the sale to VIM. Selling the stock will enable you to claim a capital loss deduction on your income tax return, and donating the proceeds will allow you to claim an income tax deduction for your charitable contribution.

The most common and convenient way to give securities is through electronic transfer from your brokerage account to VIM’s brokerage account. You simply inform your broker or bank that you wish to give securities to VIM and state the number of shares you wish to give. Please instruct your broker or bank to transfer the securities into the account for VIM. For details on electronic transfer of securities, call Joe Farmer at (541) 330-9054.

Stock certificates can be delivered to your local broker with instructions to hold for the account of and instructions from VIM. You or your broker should immediately inform Joe Farmer that the stock is being held, and he will advise your broker concerning its disposition.

For other options for transferring gifts of stock, please contact Joe Farmer at (541) 330-9054 or email to discuss these in order to avoid complications.

Planned Gifts

Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of the Cascades has established the “Founders’ Society” to encourage outright and planned gifts to VIM to build our endowment. Members of the Founders’ Society make known their intent to make an outright or planned gift to support the Clinic’s Endowment Fund.

A planned gift is generally a gift made from an individual’s estate and could be in the form of a bequest or a life-income gift (generally a trust arrangement). A bequest would come to VIM after the donor’s death whereas a trust could be set up now to provide the donor with current income for the remainder of their, or their spouses, life. Trusts come in many forms and may offer significant tax benefits to donors including reducing estate taxes, avoiding capital gains, and securing significant tax savings. In addition, donors may change the beneficiary of their insurance polices to VIM, or take out a new policy naming VIM as the beneficiary, and thereby make an estate gift.

VIM will work with the donor’s tax advisor and attorney to provide the language for an estate gift and/or to help with setting up a trust arrangement. To become a member of the “Founders’ Society,” a donor simply has to declare their intent in writing to make a gift from their estate to VIM. Please contact Joe Farmer, Development Director (541-330-9054), to secure the intent form. If you have already named VIM as a beneficiary of your estate, please call the Development Director so that we can be sure to enroll you as a member of our Founders’ Society.

In-Kind Donations

Non-cash goods and services are often donated to VIM and are greatly appreciated. Below are some ideas, guidelines and contacts for in-kind donations.

Go to VIM's Wish List of current items needed at the Clinic.

Office and Medical Supplies
VIM will accept donations of office and medical supplies when we know that we can use the particular items. We ask that you call and arrange your donation before bringing it to the Clinic 541.330.9001.

Food and Beverages
At the VIM Clinic we offer our volunteers a place to take a break and have a snack. Our kitchen area almost entirely stocked by donated food items. Businesses such as Strictly Organic, that has donated coffee since we opened, and Hola!, that donates dinner for our Tuesday night Volunteers every month, help keep our volunteers nourished and happy. Individuals on the Volunteer Hospitality Team supply a variety of snacks on a weekly basis. And sometimes, someone just feels like baking their favorite banana bread and dropping it by the Clinic. If you are interested, please email Kristi or call 541.585.9008 to arrange for your donation.

Pro bono services
There are several hundred healthcare professionals in the community who donate imaging, laboratory services and medical and surgical care to VIM patients outside of the VIM Clinic. These services are a vital and integral part of keeping VIM patients healthy and productive. Go to Community Healthcare Partners to learn more. Please email Dr. Bob Hakala or call 541.585.9017 for more information.

Some organizations donate ongoing services, such as Bend Garbage, that donates garbage removal. And other businesses provide services and products for a project such as landscaping or building maintenance.

IRA Charitable Rollover Options

IRA Charitable Rollover Option Ends December 31, 2011
The compromise tax bill (“Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Authorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010”) was extended until December 31, 2011, a provision know as the “Charitable IRA Rollover” which allows taxpayers age 70½ or older to make tax-free transfers (of up to $100,000 per year) directly from their IRA to charities.

The law, originally enacted in 2006, expired at the end of 2009, but was renewed for an additional two years, through December 31, 2011.

You can make distributions directly to one or more charities from your traditional or Roth IRA, as long as you are at least 70 ½ years old when you transfer the gifts. Such gifts can be made without increasing your taxable income or withholding. Additionally, funds transferred from your IRA to a charity will NOT subject your Social Security income to higher tax levels, and will count toward your minimum required distribution (MRD).

Example: Jack has $500,000 in an IRA and would like to contribute $25,000 to VIM in 2011. Upon hearing of the recently renewed Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, Jack directs the custodian of his IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2011 directly to VIM as his 2011 gift.  He will not be subject to tax on the $25,000 distributed to VIM.  (But neither will Jack deduct this amount because he won’t include it in his taxable income in the first place.)

Giving from an IRA rather than other assets may be especially appropriate if:

•    you use the standard deduction rather than itemizing your deductions, OR
•    you don’t need all of the minimum distribution you’re required to take from your IRA, OR
•    you plan to leave money to charity from your IRA at death anyway, OR
•    you would not be able to deduct all of your charitable contributions because of deduction limitations.

Certain limitations apply to these non-taxable charitable distributions from an IRA:

•    The gifts can only be made during 2011 (unless the legislation is extended further).
•    You must be at least 70 ½ years of age when the gift is transferred.
•    Total gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per year, per IRA owner or beneficiary. (Husband and wife with separate IRAs could give up to $200,000 per year.)
•    Gifts must be made directly from your IRA to a public charity, and cannot be made to a private foundation, a supporting organization or a donor advised fund.

•    The gifts must be outright. For instance, they cannot be used to establish a charitable gift annuity or fund a charitable remainder trust.

It is important that donors contact their IRA custodian regarding this type of transfer.

Matching Gifts

Many of our donors either work for or have retired from companies that have matching gift programs. Please check with your company’s Human Resources office to see if they match employee gifts and acquire the matching gift form and send it with your gift to VIM. In some cases, these matching gifts may double your gift to VIM.
