Volunteer

Over 100 VIM volunteers come to the VIM Clinic each week and make it possible for eligible patients to receive the medical care they need. Volunteers usually work one morning, afternoon, or evening each week. They may be doctors, mid-level providers, counselors, nurses, pharmacists, college students or just concerned members of the community who want to help.

Requirements

  • Volunteers must:
    • be at least 18 years of age.
    • be willing to make a minimum commitment of 6 months to VIM
    • be willing to submit to a routine background check
    • have the time and availability to undergo Volunteer Orientation and specific training as job-appropriate. This sometimes requires 8-10 hours.
  • No special knowledge or experience is needed for many positions however familiarity with computers and a willingness to work on them is helpful
  • Medical professionals must submit a current copy of their license.

VIM Board policy requires that all doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and mental health counselors have a valid Oregon license to volunteer in our clinic. They also will go through a credentialing process done in cooperation with the Central Oregon Independent Practitioners Association.

To volunteer as a Nurse, you must have an active Oregon State Nursing license. The volunteer hours can be credited to the 960 hours needed to renew RN license. Other clinical support volunteers are not required to have currently active licenses. VIM clinical staff will assess their skill level and assign them appropriately.

Please note that the Oregon State Board of Medical Examiners recently made it somewhat easier for retired physicians to renew and obtain licensure. Emeritus licensure allows a retired physician to practice the full range of medicine in Oregon provided he/she receives no compensation and maintains appropriate records. A Special Examination (SPEX) may be required if retired more than one year. The BME will now consider specialty recertification status or current CME documentation in deciding if SPEX would be required. Because licensure is only granted four times per year and the application process takes three months, we urge possible volunteers to apply as soon as possible for Emeritus status. The annual renewal fee has been rescinded for Emeritus status. For more information please go to the BME web site.
